After 35 years as Port Townsend’s premiere bed and breakfast inn, The James House is returning back into a private residence on November 1, 2009. Built in 1889 as a private home for Francis Wilcox James, The James House opened in 1975 as the first bed and breakfast in the pacific northwest. Under the ownership of Carol McGough since 1990, The James House has welcomed thousands of first time & returning guests, and has gained a reputation for excellence and quality. It has not only been a successful business, but a pillar for the community, supporting nonprofit organizations by hosting dozens of meetings and receptions, donating time, services, and dollars.
“I have always felt that a time would come when it would be appropriate for The James House to return to where it started....as a family home. It has had several lives in it’s 120 year history, but it feels like it will be coming full circle with a family who will respect the history, but bring it new life,” says Carol. “It has been a privilege to be a steward of such a fabulous mansion and I want to say thank you to all our guests, many who have come so frequently that they feel like family.”
We will continue to own and operate A Bungalow & Hideaway on the Bluff, the property adjacent to The James House. These two suites are more contemporary and private, with the amenities that discerning travelers have come to expect. Classy but comfortable, private but only steps from all that Port Townsend has to offer.....they are already the favorite of many guests. We think you will be pleased.
